Sunday, 5th June, 2011Well, it was a hectic week involving snails going AWOL, out of the blue interviews, lots of drinking and catching up with old friends and a train journey from hell. But at the end of it all we are proud to say we are very pleased with the exhibition which is currently open at Milkwood Gallery and we are very grateful to all who have been involved in every capacity. We are currently in the process of sorting through and uploading photographs of both exhibitions and we will soon have all information on all of the works featured and the backgrounds of all the artists. In the meantime if you're in the Cardiff area get on down to Milkwood and check out the work in the flesh. Milkwood is open Tuesday - Saturday, 10.00 - 5.00. Wednesday, 1st June, 2011Tomorrow sees the opening of the Cardiff leg of our 100:Posctards exhibitions. Slightly different to the Liverpool show, those who attend from the Private View tomorrow up until the closing of the show on 25th May will also be able to see the work of ceramicist/sculptor Josh Redman who is exhibiting in tandem with us at Milkwood Gallery.
With the two shows being quite different (Josh is exhibiting a large food like object on a table titled Dinne For One) we decided the best way to tie the two exhibitions together would be to have Josh contribute to Postcards something that he was glad to do. To see the how it comes together please make your way down to Milkwood over the next few weeks and please feel free to get in contact with us to let us know what you think. Earlier today both Josh and JazzCakes were asked to take part in an impromptu interview with Cardiff based online magazine Plastik. To read the resulting article please click here.

Just a little publicity for a show that is taking place up in Edinburgh from this Thursday. Studio and associate members of The Royal Standard will be making work in situ at Embassy Gallery as part of a city swap which saw Edinburgh-based artists make the reverse journey down to Liverpool a few weeks back. Aptly titled, Parts Unknown, the exhibition sees twelve artists (including 3 associated with JazzCakes) making work within Ebassy's white-cube basement solely from materials sourced in and around Scotland's capital. JazzCakes director, James, along with contributors Madeline Hall and Mike Carney will be making the journey north to participate in the exhibition.
Saturday, 14th May, 2011Can we just say a big thank you to all who attended last Saturday's Private View and to all who came to check out the show during the week. There has been a fantastic response to the whole project, both from participating artists and from visitors to the exhibition. Let's hope that the positive vibes continue into the second leg down in Cardiff at Milkwood.
Friday, 6th May, 2011The 100:Posctards exhibtion in The Royal Standard's Project Space opens tomorrow at 7.30pm. We hope to see many of you there to make the most of a show which uses a great space that isn't used often enough. While the main gallery at The Royal Standard is used primarily for internally curated exhibitions from visiting artists, the smaller Project Space is availaable for anybody to book out. The space can be used for anything from a white space simply for photographing your own work to laying on an exhibition like 100:Postcards. It can be both experimental & informal or polished & final. Tomorrow will be the first time the space has been used since the galleries at TRS have had a revamp so please get down and check it out!
Wednesday, 30th March, 2011New years resolutions are made to be broken right? The Royal Standard Project Space, Liverpool - Opening 7th May Milkwood Gallery, Cardiff - Opening 2nd June More information on both venues and times of the opening events will be forthcoming. We hope to see you all at at least one of these venues.
Sunday, 30th January, 2011New years resolution? Regular blog posts. Since our last post there is not a whole lot to update on regarding the JazzCakes100:Postcards project, however our very good friends Molly Rooke and Matthew Shearer, both graduates from Cardiff School of Art and Design, have been very busy recently setting up a fantastic new concept zine which goes by the name of Hours.
Each issue of Hours publishes a set of photographs taken by a chosen artist documenting a 24 hour period in their life. All photographs are taken using a disposable camera that is provided by Hours. We recently received a copy of the first issue and it really is as good as it sounds. To apply to contribute to the March issue of Hours contact hourzine@gmail.com. Hopefully there will be plenty more issues to come in the future.
Wednesday, 8th December, 2010Now then JazzCakes followers, the participating artists for JazzCakes100:Postcards have now been chosen, numbers have been allocated and creative minds are (hopefully) in top gear. All artists have until the end of March to produce their works, although we have already received some! We will be updating the project page over the coming weeks where we will be highlighting a different participating artist each week and we will have all artist's profiles updated and added to the Associated Artists page.
Friday, 22nd October, 2010We are currently having now joy whatsoever with London Art Fair, however we are in the process of applying to SELECT Contemporary Art Fair for a stand. Select seems to be a fair with an ethos that suits us better, "bringing together a cross section of some of the most interesting emerging galleries producing strong contemporary work". Would be nice to think we fit in that category. With the faor taking place in May it would give us a great opportunity to exhibit the 100:Postcard project. We do however have the issue of funding looming over our heads as stands start at £1750. In other news, we may justhave found ourselves a very handy exhibition space in Liverpool, while we are in talks with new Cardiff gallery, The Sho, about exhibiting there. Meanwhile, before we are able to exhibit any work from the 100:Postcards project we need to get some more artists on board. If you're interested in participation head over to the linked page and have a read of the info.

We are currently in the process of applying for a project space at the London Art Fair for the JazzCakes100:Postcards. It is proving to be a complicated process as they are asking for 3 images of work by each contributing artist. That mean potentially emailing 300 images to them this week. If we pull it off and raise £2000 from somewhere it will be a superb springboard for us. If we don't pull it off we haven't lost anything. Wish us luck!
Tuesday, 28th September, 2010Now we don't normally post on consecutive days but we just wanted to announce that we were recently interviewed by the lovely people at Cat On The Wall and the outcome is now available for all to see.
Monday, 27th September, 2010Ok so it looks like we're about half way to getting our 100 together. There are some very interesting and talented people who have shown an interest in taking part and hopefully in the next few weeks we'll have some established names to announce as participants. Liverpool Biennial is also in full swing now and we've been to see most of the work on offer including the excellent installation by Kaarina Kaikkonen at FACT and the great exhibition by our friends The Royal Standard, the opening of which featured a captivating live performance by the Pil and Galia Kollectiv that seemed very much to be an homage to Kraftwerk. Finally we're just going wish co-director Sarah-Jane the very best of luck as she embarks on her first year of an Acting degree at ALRA today. It has been four years in the waiting but she's finally got there.
Sunday, August 15th, 2010Unfortunately, since the last post it has been decided that JazzCakes will not be taking part in the Made In Roath festival, due in part to our relocation to Liverpool. We are still going ahead with the 100:Postcards project and are still on the lookout for participating artists. The hunt will probably be on going unitl the month of November. We will then take a few weeks to decide on the final 100 artists before issuing them with their briefs and assigning their numbers. Exciting times.
Saturday, 10th July, 2010Wow! Where did that month go? Finally, we just want to say thank you to everybody who was able to come down to Central-Reservation today for Checkout No. 4, the last in the series of great art markets in Bristol's Stokes Croft. It was a great day and we met a whole bunch of great new people and may even have come up with yet another new project for the future! There was also great barbecue, great cakes and great coffee. So overall it was... GREAT.
Saturday, 12th June, 2010So it has been a quiet period for JazzCakes these last two months, time to reflect back on an exciting year and regroup in preparation for what promises to be an even more exciting twelve months to come. In the meantime we are taking part in Buffalo Boutique Independent Designers and Vintage Market this Wednesday 16th, where we will be selling a selct number of works from the 100:T-shirts project. We will also have some fantastic limited edition posters for sale, there's only 100 being made so get them while you can.
Monday, 12th April, 2010We're not quite recovered yet, but what a fantastic weekend! We never really expected that many people to turn up to the opening but at one point I left an empty courtyard to go to the toilet and when I got back there was not room to move! Amazing. A massive JazzCakes thankyou to everybody who made it along on Saturday and Sunday. Over the next few days (weeks) we'll be adding full info about each t-shirt which you will be able to access by clicking the instax thumbnails here. 'And what's next for JazzCakes?' Well... you'll just have to watch this space won't you.
Saturday, 10th April, 2010Today is the day. After a few sleepless nights we are finally ready for the JazzCakes100:T-shirts exhibition. Whether you are planning on coming to this evening's opening or tomorrow's daytime viewing, or even if you can't make it at all, you can take a sneaky miniature view of the all t-shirts here. Hopefully the beautiful weather will remain and tonight will be a roaring success with plenty of alcohol consumed. We look forward to seeing you all at some point throughout the exhibition.
Wednesday, 31st March, 2010Ten days to go til the exhibition. Excitement, nerves and tension linger in the air with the smell of freshly painted walls. We'll be painting even more over the next few days and installing the work next week. If anybody is free on Thursday, 8th April for a day of installation then please get in touch. We had initially intended to have a catalogue available at the exhibition, however we have now decided it is best to wait unitil after the opening so that we cn include images and text documenting the exhibition itself as well as the rest of the project.
Thursday, 18th March, 2010So the JazzCakes100:T-shirts project is finally approaching it's climax, and we have very big announcement to make. We are delighted to reveal that the opening of the 100:Tshirts exhibition will take place on 10th April, 2010, at Studio B (underneath Fireworks) in Riverside. The exhibition is being held in tandem with an open studio exhibition of work by the resident artists of Studio B. We are really excited about this and hope that as many people as possible can make it to the event. The exhibition will be open for one day after the opening for those of you who are afraid of the dark.
Saturday, 13th February, 2010Hello and welcome to the new and eagerly anticipated JazzCakesBlog. The diversity of styles shown in the end results coming from such a simple starting point is absolutely what we had wanted and hoped for. Everything from Spike Dennis' sequin encrusted epic at number one to Angie Harrison's poingnant collage at number 99 (we're yet to receive number 100). So suffice to say we're pretty happy this morning and we're keely waiting in anticipation for the remaining t-shirts. Here's a little something to put you in the same mood as we are in...CLICK HERE |
