The JazzCakes100:T-shirts project is the first in a series of projects invisioned by JazzCakes to illuminate each facet of the arts arena. The initial idea for this project series was thought up in early 2009. At the time James and Sarah were creating short runs of t-shirts with their own hand made designs. The format of how their t-shirts were released was coming into question and with it the traditional idea the 'limited edition'. Although the t-shirts they were creating were of the same design, they were all subtly different due to them being hand printed and hand embroidered. The idea to amplify these subtle differences was discussed and after much consultation with friends and collaborators, it was decided that this would be done by inviting different artists to contribute to each t-shirt in the edition. An edition of 100 was agreed upon and each number, one to one hundred was assigned to a different artist. The first public viewing of the '100 T-shirts' took place over the weekend of 10th/11th April, 2010 in tandem with an open studio exhibition by Studio B resident artists in Cardiff. Video documentation of The opening event was filmed by Robert S Pugh |
